Songs About Drugs

Many songs have been written about drugs. They glorify them, tell of their use, and tell of their effects. Even more songs have been written by people who were taking drugs at the time, or were recovering from their effects or from an addiction. Some songs are blatantly about doing drugs, and others merely hint towards their use. Some songs use imagery to suggest drug use, and some songs that "smarter" people insist are about drugs just plain aren’t. The use of drugs corresponds very nicely with the ease of their production, which is one of the marvels of modern science. Therefore, we figured that tunes about drugs would fit very nicely into our theme of the effects of science on music.

Drugs can also greatly affect one’s perception of life. In many cases we find people taking drugs in order to slow down this ever hastening world. In Mother’s Little Helper, a mother trying to keep up with the modern world uses great quantities of Valium. In 2000 Light Years From Home, we can see through the eyes of someone who probably has had too many slow-down drugs, most likely marijuana.

On the other hand, there are those who want to keep going faster than life will allow. This segment of the population might include the traveler in 2000 Light Years From Home, who’s hurtling through space headed for infinity. Another good example of drug use in songs can be found in White Rabbit, where Jefferson Airplane is visualizing all of the neat stuff they’re taking and what it does to them.

Music’s love affair with drugs has brought the music world some interesting songs, and some really weird ones as well. What is really funny are the songs that people think are about drugs, but aren’t, like Magic Carpet Ride. Magic Carpet Ride actually is a song about listening to music rather than drug use.
