As far as final projects go, it
would be safe to say that this has been one of the most enjoyable ones that any of the three of us have ever worked on. The reason behind this enjoyment is our mutual love of good music. In general, we all felt that the songs of the past have much more meaning than the songs that are currently topping the charts. As a result, we decided to focus our efforts on detailing how science is reflected in music.
In order to do this, we
collectively compiled a list of songs that we felt appropriately reflected our theme. When all was said and done, we had edited our list down to 37 songs that we felt were good examples of how science is portrayed in music. We then set about gathering data about these songs, and constructed a web page for each song. Each web page includes the album cover, a 30 second sound clip, the lyrics of the song, and a short interpretation of the meaning behind the song.
         After studying the information we
gathered, we decided to break these songs down into four distinct categories. These categories are: Songs About Drugs, Songs About The Effects Of Science And Technology, Songs With Images Of Science And Technology, and Technologically Significant Songs In The History Of Music. Each of these categories has its own web page, which is linked to below. In addition, we have also included a web page regarding the history of the guitar in American music.
From doing this project, we have
concluded that science has a great impact on the music industry. Not only does changing technology affect the instruments and electronics that the musicians use, it also greatly affects the subjects that songs are written about.. While science is not always directly mentioned in the lyrics of a song, it often will create the conflict that occurs in the lyrics of the song.
         Finally, we have also included
something that has very little to do with science, and nothing to do with
music. Thanks to Justin Poirier, we now have a "Random Philosophy
Generator," which will generate pages upon pages of bullshit
philosophy which can be used in any suitable term paper, web page, or job application. Enjoy, and please use it responsibly.
