We Didn’t Start The Fire is a
chronicle of history from 1949 to
the present (1989, because this is
the year of the album.) This song
features many scientific images,
such as television, the H-Bomb,
children of Thalidomide, and the
U-2. It is an overview of many
major people, events, and
inventions that shaped our society.
Our society is essentially based on
technology, and this song reflects
it. Interestingly enough, the
lyrics in the album jacket have the
years that correspond with the
events. Every two lines from 1949
to 1963 correspond to a different
year in sequence. This is usually
not reflected in online versions of
the lyrics.
